Description
Bitumen Emulsion MS-1 refers to a specific medium-setting (MS) type of bitumen emulsion used in road construction.
What is MS-1 Bitumen Emulsion?
MS-1 stands for Medium Setting Grade 1 bitumen emulsion.
It is produced by dispersing bitumen in water using an emulsifying agent and is formulated to break (set) at a moderate rate.
Characteristics
Medium setting: Suitable for mixing with aggregates that are not highly reactive (e.g., sand or fine aggregates).
Low viscosity: Easier to pump, spray, or mix.
Brownish liquid, turns black when broken after curing.
Cationic or anionic, depending on manufacturer, but cationic MS-1 is most common today.
Uses of MS-1
MS-1 emulsions are widely used for:
Prime Coats
Applied on granular base or sub-base before laying hot mix asphalt.
Functions:
Penetrates and binds loose particles
Reduces dust
Improves bonding between base and asphalt layer
Fog Seals & Surface Seals
Used for rejuvenating old pavement surfaces and sealing minor cracks.
Slurry Mixes Sand Seals
Useful for creating thin protective layers using sand or fine aggregates.
Cold Mix Applications
Can be mixed with aggregate at ambient temperatures for patching and maintenance work.
Advantages
Can be applied without heating
Safer and more environmentally friendly than cutback bitumen
Better penetration for prime coat applications
Improves adhesion between layers
Technical Data Sheet (TDS) of Bitumen Emulsion MS-1
| Property | Value Specification | Test Method |
|---|
| Viscosity (Saybolt Furol) @ 25 °C | 20–100 sec | ASTM D88 / ASTM D244 |
| Storage Stability (24 h) | ≤ 1.0% separation or instability | ASTM D244 (or analogous) |
| Sieve Test (Residue on 600 µm sieve) | ≤ 0.10% (or ≤ 0.05 — depending on spec) | |
| Particle Charge (for anionic MS-1) | Negative charge | ASTM D224 (or according to spec) |
| Residue by Distillation / Evaporation | ≥ 55% (some specs ≥ 60-65%) | |
| Penetration of Residue (at 25 °C, 100 g, 5 s) | 100–200 dmm (typical) | |
| Ductility of Residue @ 25 °C | ≥ 40 cm (some specs require more) | |
| Solubility of Residue in Trichloroethylene | ≥ 97.5% by weight | ASTM D2042 |
Additional Properties
Colour and Appearance: Brownish liquid (aqueous emulsion)
Free flow at ambient temperature no heating required before application (for premix or spray)
Compatibility: Works with damp or dry aggregates (especially fine granular base), as cationic or anionic emulsions help coat aggregates properly.
Applications of MS-1
Prime coat on granular base sub-base before asphalt overlay.
Cold-mix surfacing patching (mixing with aggregate at ambient temperature).
Dust suppression, base stabilization on unpaved roads (depending on aggregate & local spec) though MS-1 is more common for binding/mixing rather than slow-setting sealing.
