Bitumen Emulsion QS-1h is a quick-setting, cationic bitumen emulsion commonly used in tack coats and surface treatments for road construction.
What is The QS-1h Means
Q = Quick-setting → breaks (sets) very fast when in contact with aggregates.
S = Slow-flowing (low viscosity).
1 = Light application grade.
h = Hard residual bitumen (higher penetration grade durability).
Main Uses of Bitumen Emulsion QS-1h
QS-1h is widely used for:
Tack coats between asphalt layers
Fog seals
Prime coat on granular bases (in some specs)
Maintenance treatments
Cold mix patching (when quick setting is needed)
Its fast breaking ensures minimal tracking and rapid continuation of paving operations.
Properties (general specifications)
Residue by distillation: ~ 50–60%
Viscosity at 25°C: low (quick sprayability)
PH: typically acidic (cationic emulsion)
Setting time: Fast (minutes)
Adhesion: Good on most aggregates
Color: Dark brown (turns black after setting)
Application Rates
For tack coats (most common use):
0.20 – 0.30 L/m² (diluted)
0.08 – 0.15 L/m² (residual bitumen)
Advantages
Quick drying → minimal delay in paving
Strong adhesion between layers
Easy sprayability
Good penetration on slightly dusty surfaces
Compatible with a wide range of aggregates
Bitumen Emulsion QS-1h Technical Data Sheet
Product Name Grade: QS-1h (Quick-Setting Bitumen Emulsion, 1h grade)
Type: Bitumen + water + emulsifiers → water-based emulsion.
Setting Characteristic: Quick-setting (fast breaking upon contact with aggregate surface) for rapid tack surface treatment.
Application Mode: Cold application (spray, brush, squeegee, roller as appropriate) no heating required.
Common Uses: Tack coat between asphalt layers, surface dressing, patching maintenance, fog seal, prime coat on water bound bases, road surface maintenance.

Storage & Application Guidelines
Storage temperature: avoid freezing; store in moderate temperature water based emulsions are sensitive to freeze thaw cycles.
Container cleanliness: Tanks distributors must be free of contaminants (especially residual anionic emulsions or solvents) to avoid destabilizing the emulsion.
Application conditions: Surface should be clean, properly prepared (free of excessive dust, loose particles), and aggregate or base should be compatible with anionic emulsion.
Post application: Allow for proper curing breaking before traffic or next layer application QS-1h is designed for quick bond development reducing downtime.
What is 1h means
The suffix 1 indicates a light application grade (for typical tack coats or surface applications).
The letter h usually refers to a hard residual bitumen (relatively harder residue after water evaporation, giving better durability adhesion).
Remarks & Considerations
Emulsions with identical grade (QS-1h) may vary slightly in properties depending on the bitumen source, emulsifier package, additives, water quality, and manufacturing process.
Before use always request from supplier the actual test report (COA) showing viscosity, residue content, sieve test, etc., as per relevant standard (e.g. ASTM or AASHTO).
For special applications (e.g. thin overlays, dusty aggregates, high ambient temperature), a trial test patch is recommended to ensure proper setting and adhesion.
For cold application projects, QS-1h is often preferred vs hot applied bitumen but be cautious with ambient humidity, cleanliness and surface preparation.
