Description

Bitumen Emulsion SS-1 is a slow-setting (SS) cationic or anionic bitumen emulsion used primarily for tack coats, slurry seals, and soil stabilization.

What is Bitumen Emulsion SS-1?
SS-1 stands for Slow Setting – Grade 1 bitumen emulsion.
It contains bitumen + water + emulsifying agents, designed to break (set) slowly, allowing enough working time for mixing with fine aggregates or for uniform surface application.
Depending on region, SS-1 may be:
Anionic SS-1
Cationic CSS-1 (the cationic version; sticks better to dusty or aged surfaces)

Main Uses
Tack Coat
Applied between asphalt layers to ensure strong bonding
SS-1 or CSS-1h (harder version) commonly used
Diluted with water (often 1:1 depending on specifications)

Prime Coat (on granular surfaces)
When diluted and allowed to penetrate
Seals the base and promotes bond with asphalt layers

Slurry Seal / Micro-surfacing
Used as the binder for fine aggregates in slurry mixtures

Soil Stabilization
Mixed with fine soil due to its slow-setting behavior

Properties and Specifications

Values vary by country, but common ranges:

RequirementSS-1 Value (Typical)Standard
Residue≥ 57–60%ASTM / AASHTO
Viscosity @25°C20–100 sASTM / AASHTO
Storage Stability≤ 1%ASTM / AASHTO
Sieve Test≤ 0.1%ASTM / AASHTO
Penetration @25°C100–250 dmmASTM / AASHTO
Ductility @25°C≥ 40 cmASTM / AASHTO

Why SS-1 is Classified as Slow Setting

Contains emulsifiers that allow it to remain workable longer

Best for fine aggregates where quick breaking would cause clumping

Application Tips
Apply on clean, dry surface
Ideal spray temperature: 50–60°C (depending on spec)
Allow to break fully (turn dark) before paving
Do not apply during rain or when rain is expected soon

Safety and handling guidelines for Bitumen Emulsion SS-1

  • General Safety Precautions
SS-1 is water-based, but it still contains hot bitumen—it can cause burns and slip hazards.
Keep the work area ventilated, especially indoors or in tanks.
Avoid direct contact with skin and eyes.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    Workers handling SS-1 should use:
    Mandatory:
    Chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile or neoprene)
    Long sleeves and long pants
    Safety glasses or face shield
    Safety boots (non-slip)
    Hard hat
    Recommended:
    High-visibility vest
Dust mask during spray operations (fine mist inhalation protection)
  • Thermal Safety
Although SS-1 is emulsified, it is often heated slightly for spraying.
Do not exceed 60–70°C (as per manufacturer recommendation).
Avoid smoking or open flames near storage tanks.
Heated distributor tanks must have functional temperature gauges.
Wear thermal-resistant gloves when working near heated hoses/pipes.
  • Handling & Storage
    Storage
Store in shaded, cool, and well-ventilated areas.
    Protect from freezing—emulsion breaks irreversibly.
    Avoid contamination with:
    Cement
    Diesel
    Salt water
    Strong acids/alkalis
    These will destabilize the emulsion.
    Handling
Agitate gently if the emulsion has been sitting (avoid violent stirring).
Do not pump with gear pumps—use centrifugal pumps.
Keep containers tightly closed when not in use.
  • Spill Response
    Small Spills
Cover with sand, soil, or sawdust.
    Scoop into containers for disposal.
    Final cleanup with water.
    Large Spills
    Contain with soil berms.
Divert away from drains and watercourses.
Contact environmental or safety personnel immediately.
    Slip Hazard
Fresh emulsion creates extremely slippery surfaces.
    Isolate and barricade the area.
  • First Aid Measures
    Skin Contact
Wash immediately with plenty of water.
Do not use solvents (diesel, gasoline) to clean skin.
If bitumen residue sticks, cool with water and seek medical help—don’t try to peel it off.
    Eye Contact
Rinse with clean water for 15 minutes.
    Seek medical attention.
    Inhalation
    Move to fresh air.
If breathing difficulty persists, get medical attention.
    Ingestion
Unlikely, but do not induce vomiting.
    Seek medical attention.
  • Transportation Safety
Transport in sealed, properly labeled containers.
Keep drums upright and secure to prevent tipping.
Ensure valves and hoses on distributor trucks are tight.
  • Environmental Guidelines
Avoid release into storm drains, rivers, or agricultural land.
Emulsified asphalt contains additives that may harm aquatic life.
Allow spills to break (water evaporates) before disposal.
    🛠️ 9. Equipment Cleaning
Clean spray bars, hoses, and nozzles with water before the emulsion breaks.
After breaking, use mechanical scraping—avoid solvents.
Dispose of wash water responsibly; prevent entry into drains.
  • Documentation
    Workers should be familiar with:
    Site Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS / SDS) for the specific SS-1 product
    Emergency contact numbers
    Equipment operating manuals
