Bitumen 30/40

Bitumen 30/40

Bitumen 30/40 is a penetration grade bitumen, where 30/40 means that under the standard test (at 25 °C, 100 g, 5 s) a needle penetrates 30–40 deci millimetres (dmm).

Its typical properties: softening point around 55–63 °C, specific gravity ≈ 1.01–1.06 (at 25 °C), ductility at 25 °C ≥ 100 cm, loss on heating ≤ 0.2 wt%, solubility in CS₂ ≥ 99.5%, flash point ≥ 250 °C.

Description

Bitumen 30/40 is a penetration grade bitumen commonly used in road construction. The numbers 30/40 indicate the penetration value of the bitumen:

30 = minimum penetration

40 = maximum penetration
Measured in 0.1 mm at 25°C.

Characteristics

Harder grade compared to 40/50 or 60/70.

High viscosity, offering greater resistance to deformation.

Suitable for hot climates where pavement must withstand high temperatures.

Applications

Heavy-duty road construction

High-traffic highways

Asphalt pavements requiring high stiffness

Durable wearing courses
