Description

Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) is a type of bitumen that has been enhanced by adding polymers to improve its performance.

These polymers often are SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) or APP (Atactic Polypropylene) alter the rheological (flow) properties of the bitumen, making it more durable and better suited for demanding conditions.
Why Must Modify The Bitumen with Polymers?
Standard bitumen softens at high temperatures and becomes brittle at low temperatures. Polymers help overcome these limitations by enhancing:
Elasticity
Resistance to deformation (rutting)
Temperature susceptibility
Fatigue resistance
Adhesion to aggregates

Common Types of Polymers Used
SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene)
Creates an elastic, rubber-like bitumen.
Great for climates with large temperature variations.
APP (Atactic Polypropylene)
Creates a plastic, more flow-resistant bitumen.
Common in roofing membranes and warm regions.
Other modifiers
Crumb rubber, EVA, PE, etc.

Applications of PMB
High-performance road pavements (highways, airports, heavy-traffic roads)
Bridge decks
Rutting-prone areas
Waterproofing and roofing membranes

Advantages
Longer service life of pavements
Reduced maintenance costs
Better resistance to cracking, rutting, and stripping
Improved performance under both high and low temperatures

Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) based on common standards such as EN 14023, ASTM, and various national road authorities (India, Australia, EU, etc.) has widely used specifications.

Common PMB Grades
Different regions use different grading systems. Typical PMB grades include:

Indian (MoRTH / IRC) PMB Grades
PMB 40
PMB 70
PMB 120

European (EN 14023)
PMB 10/40-65
PMB 25/55-60
PMB 45/80-55
PMB 65/105-60
